Welcome to Teaching!!

The following points may be of use to you if you are newly qualified as a primary teacher. The information is based on my own experiences and in no way seeks to solicit on behalf of any organisation or business.

Education Posts is a fantastic resourse for finding teaching posts in Ireland. You can search by post description or by county. Check it often as it is updated daily. This site also has a discussion board where you can discuss any topic with other teachers. You must register separately for the job searches and the discussion board.

The independent Newspaper is also a great resourse for finding jobs. It tends to have more posts than the other papers. You can search for posts on the website Irish Independent Newspaper.

INTO is the Irish National Teachers Organisation. This is the union that primary teachers belong to. There is also the TUI and the ASTI however these cater for the second level teachers. It is highly advisable to join a union as soon as you begin working. You can join as a substitute or as a temporary/permanent teacher. There is a difference in cost. You should ask your INTO representative in school to help you join.

On the INTO website you will also find links to mailing lists. These are specific to subjects and posts and many have a history you can search through. Search for them on the INTO website.

The Education Centres will be a invaluable to you in your continued professional development. You should find the centre closest to you. They will have a library which you can borrow from and they will usually run NQT courses in September. They also run courses throuout the year and the summer courses you can earn EPV days from.

You'll find lots of help on the PCSP website to assist you in planning. This site holds all the notes and handouts from the inservice days.
